Italy and digital: how the consumption of web services increased in 2020

More and more Italians are connecting to the internet every day. According to the report Global Digital Report 2021 published by We Are Social in 2020 alone, approximately one of the Italians who accessed the internet for the first time were million. This growth, equal to 2%, has brought the total to 50 million Italian users connected.

More and more users every day access web services for the first time, but above all, more and more people use web services in their daily lives. Data consumption is mainly due to ease of access: the 97% of users access internet services via smartphone while 3 out of 4 people use desktops and laptops. The web is increasingly becoming an indispensable asset. The Global Digital 2021 report highlights how much time spent on the web has also increased: on average a user spends 6 hours a day on the internet, two of which are on social networks. The latter, in 2020 alone, recorded a 6% increase in subscriptions. This is because the internet connection gives the possibility to enjoy various contents: we think of music, games, social networks, apps in general, messaging apps.

A very relevant fact and WhatsApp that is the second most used social platform in Italy, second only to YouTube. What do we notice from these data?

  • That more and more people are connected and for longer;
  • That E-commerce is growing more and more;
  • That The vast majority of users access the internet via smartphone;
  • The second most used platform is messaging.

Another (this time encouraging) piece of data is the increase in sales recorded by e-commerce: in Italy, we spent 24% more than in 2019 in the macro-world of consumer goods. Over 33 million Italians purchased products online for an annual expenditure of approximately $625.
